Vettisfossen viewpoint. vettisfossen, norway. 2022
With a drop of 275 metres, Vettisfossen is Northern Europe’s highest unregulated waterfall and a popular destination for visitors to Jotunheimen National Park. The viewing platform is an extension of the path, cantilevered over the gorge. The platform is made with corten steel plates that bend outwards and downwards towards the edge of the gorge, giving a wide view down the falls.
Foundations on the underlying rock were demanding because cracks in the rock indicated possible erosion of the rock edge. The resulting forces from the increased torque arm were therefore anchored in the rock with rock bolts mounted five meters inside the ridge edge, which ensures safe and secure travel for visitors.
It was important to limit damage to the plot during the execution. The platform was designed so that all parts could be lifted in by helicopter and assembled on site. The landscape has since been restored and planted with local vegetation.
